Just read
'My Life as a Fake' by Peter Carey. What do we think of Peter Carey? I have never been a huge fan, and this one probably didn't do much to tip me over the line. I like the paper they used for the cover - that's a bad sign right? Think rah rah Brits in the poetry scene who have an adventure in Malaya and everyone's grubby and tortured or bristling with indignation and drinking tea and upset about their parents and worried about their patrons. As you do. Liked some bits of it - main character not as objectionable as she could be, some nice quotes from other poems. The whole actual premise of the story dragged on a bit though. Wont say more as I know I have just lent it to you Merryrisa!

Lined up next
Murakami 'kafka on the shore"
Chuck Palahniuk "diary"
Patrick Suskind "perfume" (No, I've never read it!)

I liked "My Life as a Fake" - it is actually the first Carey book I have been able to read from cover to cover.
I found the premise of the story interesting (based on a real-life literary fraud that happened in 1940's Australia - "Ern Malley"), the setting (Malaysia) equally interesting. The Author seems to have developed interesting views on his native country from afar - not necessarily unbelievable.
This one gets a medal for picking an original topic at the very least.
Don't know what I think about the writing style, which included complete lack of quotation marks, instead with each new speaker's words starting on a new paragraph, and the "(s)he said." bits separated from the dialogue only by comma...
